Rewind 2011

The year almost ends and the upcoming future waits. It’s been a tough year for Philippines since Tropical Storm Sendong hits Mindanao before the year ends but it doesn’t mean that the year will end with full of hopeless dreams for the upcoming future.

Looking back on the days of devastation, happiness and the moments with full of hopes leads every individual one step away for a brighter future. Reminds me of the famous phrase of us Filipinos, “Ang hindi marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan”, genuine right?

We spent another 365 days with full of smiles, frowns and laughs. We have to accept the reality that life must go on, life must not stop even though it seems very hard to move on when we still have those heartaches left. Time heals and smiles & laughs heal the scars.

Rewinding the past every minute of the day of 2011 brings us to the destination where we wanted to be. Hopes don’t die, dreams do come true.

2012 seems a minute away and seems, it is also seconds away before we leave 2011. Another year is here to come, another chapter would be written in our little book of life, every memoir counts.  When past and future affiliates, it gives a shining year for each and everyone.

Let us leave our past heartaches and enjoy the forthcoming year.

Happy New Year!

Help Mindanao

It was only an ordinary day for everyone as the start of the Evening Mass came. It was sunny in the morning yet cloudy in the afternoon and inevitable that it will rain in the evening. It was seven in the evening when the rain poured hard but seldom disappears and then goes back again. The rain seems has a scheme on what time it will pour down.

Around 8 o’clock PM when the electricity was lost, a moment later, it came back. Not more that fifteen minutes when the electricity was lost again. No signs of electric current to come back. Around 11 when strong winds approached, it is accompanied with rain not knowing that the center of Cagayan de Oro City is already in a great calamity.

Morning came when we heard news regarding last night’s events. Typhoon Sendong left our city undefined. Sendong visited Cagayan de Oro City with just an hour and left the whole city devastated.

Our city badly needs great help. We need donations in any kind but much better if water. 80% of our city’s water operation is paralyzed we still have to wait for a month to have the 100%.

You can send you donation thru:

Simbang Gabi (Evening Mass)

image form Google

Christmas is in the air. As of December 15, 2011, 10:24 AM, there are only 9 days-13 hours-33 minutes until Christmas.

A common practice of Christians during this yuletide season especially when the dawn of December 16 comes is the Simbang Gabi. This part of the year is the most memorable, enjoyable and also the solemn. When Simbang Gabi comes, we have the feeling of “Christmas is near”. Absolutely! Remember the song “Simbang Gabi, simula ng pasko!”? It is actually the start of Christmas though we are also known for the longest Christmas celebration but this time, we can actually feel that December 25 is coming.

Waking up so early is not a hindrance for us. I remember those days that I enjoy strolling heading to church with my friends and with my family in a cold morning breeze. It seems that everything would be great for the next few days before the year ends.

As a Filipino, who believes on superstitious beliefs, I am proud to say that I try my best to complete the 9 masses to make a wish. Sounds funny but I believe that. Probably, when you were a kid, we have the same thought about Simbang Gabi. Well, it would also be nice if we pray for our family’s health and happiness during this solemn time.

God bless and may you have a joyful Christmas!

The Unkabogable

“Vice Ganda (born March 31, 1976) is a Filipino comedian, host, actor and recording artist. He is a regular host/judge on ABS-CBN’s talent show Showtime and starred on his two films, one of which considered as the highest-grossing film in Philippine cinema. Also he is best known for his stand-up routines, for which he use observational comedy on typical “Pinoy” lifestyle and using situational irony and sarcasm pertaining to Filipino culture & behavior and human sexuality. He is the first openly gay endorser for a major product, which is Globe Telecom in the Philippines.”  Wikipedia defines Vice Ganda.

From rags to riches experience, Vice stayed as humble as he could be. The early story of “The Supermodel turned actress turned horse” (his description on his twitter account) is similarly or should we say a common phenomena for gays and for those who haven’t yet confirmed their selves if their straight or still in the process of identity crisis. The story of Jose Marie Borja Viceral were viewed by millions of people around the world which was aired by MMK (Maalaala Mo Kaya) wherein we witnessed how  Vice faced the consequences of being a young gay who haven’t yet confess that he is a gay for some big reasons and that is because of his father but we were able to witness the success of Vice. His story is not far from other gays, the factual basis that gays are not being accepted by their fathers wherein he promotes that fathers should accept their gay sons and be proud of them.

In his early life, Vice was a stand-up comedian in a bar somewhere in Manila which his stardom started. As years have passed, the big break that Vice waited for a long time came. That big break started when he was introduced as a judge and also a host of Showtime. The phrase “May nag text!” was also popularized by Vice Ganda where his jokes (genuinely) are funny.  One of his notable works was the top grossed rating movie “The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin” starred by one of the best actors in the Philippines, Derek Ramsay and his past movie, “Petrang Kabayo”. By those top grossing film, Vice has a reason to smile but the most adorable attitude that Vice posses is being humble and that made him the Unkabogable Vice Ganda.

As a public figure, it is a common occurrence to receive criticism. One of his critics viewed his jokes as an insult and he was actually compared to boy-pick up (acted by Ogie Alcasid) as a result that a Facebook Fanpage with a name “Boy Pick-up VS. Vice Ganda” hits 149, 725 as of December 05, 2011, 05:16 PM. Nevertheless, Vice gained 1 million +++ followers on twitter with an account of @vicegandako. Years before, he was also the first Filipino to acquire 1 million likes on Facebook and obtain already 3, 664, 564 likes on Facebook as of December 05, 2011.

As for now, Vice enjoys his life being a host of Showtime and his Gandang Gabi Vice but his journey to famous are not yet done. Good luck Vice!

Happy Holidays !

Everyone can already feel the cool breeze in the morning, the songs that can make them remember that another special season is coming, it’s CHRISTMAS! Christmas songs can now be heard, the joyful Christmas cheers and the smiles of our little kids are incomparable. Another memorable season is soon to be added in our memoir and colorful pictures and big smiles will be captured by cameras. Our year would be incomplete without those stuffs.

Filipino culture towards Christmas is absolutely one of kind. Christmas is not complete without our loved ones, Christmas carolers cheer up the street, dazzling and twinkling lights captures are eyes and of course, the puto-bongbong which is served during simbang gabi will dominate again the joyful dawns of the street. But one of the most favorite parts of Filipinos during Christmas season is the noche buena (aminin HAHAHA). Lechon, ham, spaghetti, salad, pansit, crispy pata, fried chicken and so much more are sure to be served on the table on Christmas’ eve.  Filipino celebrates Christmas the way our Filipino ancestor celebrates Christmas hundreds of decades ago. OFW or those who work abroad seeks always the Filipino celebration of Christmas, as they said “there’s no place like home”. How happy we would be when we see our love ones during this yuletide season.

When the month of December sets in the calendar, it will be filled by hectic party schedules. Yes! You read it right! It’s been a tradition to have parties and discos all night long and all month long and of course, gift giving is also an undying tradition. Christians and other religion had embraced also the culture of giving presents during Christmas. Sharing is one of the essences of Christmas but the top most is spreading out love throughout our countrymen and forgiving our enemies. This is the time for peace and a joy. We have maintained the habit of giving gifts that are very expensive it’s better to give the priceless gift, love. It would be the most beautiful gift you could ever give. It will bring joy to your family, friends and to God.

As a Christian, we celebrate Christmas for the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. We expect that kids of today’s generation seldom ask about Santa. They would ask if Santa is true or does he really give presents or something. I have received this message from one of my friends regarding about Christmas and Santa. It talks about that kids of today’s generation are more into seeing Santa Claus than Jesus Christ. Even though they knew that December 25 is the birth of our Savior, they are more excited to see Santa Claus. Parents should let their children understand about the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is the time for giving and forgiving, a time for peace and joy, a time where problem are set aside and hopes and dreams are expedite. Distorted feeling are being fixed and sorrows and burdens are replaced by calmness and understanding. Christmas has lots of meaning. It can’t be define by the dictionary, by Wikipedia, can’t be search on Google or can be found on Twitter trends or Facebook updates thus its true meaning can be found inside our hearts. It only waits for a right time for you to open it and when you open it, it would be the most beautiful gift you would receive.

May everyone find their definition of Christmas and its true meaning.

Happy Holidays!

it is spelled as P-O-V-E-R-T-Y

Almost a hundred decade has passed and yet we are still experiencing the undying social problem, poverty. Indeed, big questions are still clogging on our minds: how can we pass though this problem? It seems that this social problem is like a fashion trend, an undying topic for many centuries, an economic chismis.  My professor in Sociology told us that poverty started in the pre-historical Philippines which the first Filipinos were nomads or those who don’t haven permanent address. I have this thought that, poverty is our trademark.

When I was born, I already embraced the reality; a fact that Filipino knows.  We are insecure of other countries’ wealth and progress. We are looking for someone to lead. We are looking for someone to guide BUT let’s face the truth: poverty arouses. One thing is for sure, population is the cause. Philippines are one of the countries who have a big scale of number in terms of unemployment. The country of Nauro has 90% of its population are unemployed, is our country heading to that pattern also? Reality bites thus we can make a change through simple innovations and also with the help of the government, in the other hand, we depend so much in our government. One of the famous phrases of the famous President of the United States America, John F. Kennedy “Don’t ask what the government can do to you, ask what you can do to the government”. As we depend too much in the government, we always blame them for the unimproved Philippines. We can’t blame our brothers and sisters because the big impact goes to them.

The government helps our poor country men, YES they help our country men but not all of them are committed to help them instead MONEY runs on their mind. CORRUPTION sets in. Population is not the only reason why poverty occurs but also corruption. It’s not illegal to dream to be rich, to be the famous country of all times but we are still on the part of insecurity, we don’t have an original style today, we always copy from the Western countries which I believe not bad but it should be limited. Our culture comes first and by that, we can start in the process of improving but still a question, should we give or just wait for another administration?

The Rhythm

It is always my dream to become a singer and to dominate the stage and also to be spotted by the lime light but sad to say, I don’t know how to sing but I definitely love music. It was my first love, to sing and secondly is to dance and then I develop the passion in writing because of reading novels. Actually, without being bias, people tend to show their greatness when they hear me singing in front of them but for me, I believe I don’t have that talent. I can’t even reach the highest pitch or to sang the song of Beyonce Knowles’ Listen or Whitney Houston’s Try It on my Own but then, I still love to sing. So much for that, before I decided what to make this blog, I decided to be a music blogger since I merely love music at all, you can see me singing one of my favorite songs over and over again. My close friends told me that every time there’s a new music, I’m always updated, UPDATED as in UPDATED because before that music is being forecast on the radios and other local TV shows here in the Philippines (Philippines is always late in terms of music) I already memorize the song. Of course, I’m still updated with the latest moves. It’s one of my hobbies, to dance. Dancing is the most enjoyable exercise ever!

Since we are talking about music, this article of mine is also about music and the persons behind those Top songs in iTunes if you know what I mean. Music is divided into many genres in many different ways but the most common genres are the POP, R&B, ROCK, ACOUSTIC and HIP-HOP music. Now these 5 genres are the most common and often used by many artists in today’s generation. And this defines the 5.

POP- its term is originally derived form the word “popular” it is “usually understood as the commercially recorded music”. This type of genre is being oriented by the youth since this are the most listened type of music and this are simple songs that utilizes technological innovations to produce another new type of present themes.

R&B- commonly known as the “rhythm and blues”. Actually, when I was young, I call this as the RNB which I actually thought correct but the big thing is, until today, R&B is still called as RNB. This R&B is a type of music of popular African American songs.

ROCK- Rock is typically played by electric guitars. It is a genre of popular music that was develops during and after the 1960s which has roots in the year of 1940s and 1950s. This genre is being influenced by the rhythm and blues and country music.

ACOUSTIC- is now one of the most and often heard by the radio. Some artist which uses these genres revives old or new songs into the most solemn type which is acoustic. Commonly, rock and pop songs are the music usually revives by an artist. It comprises music that solely or primarily uses instruments like guitars which produce sound through entirely acoustic means.

HIP-HOP- also named as rap music or hip-hop music is a type of musical genre that consists rhythmic music and melody and accompanies rapping. Hip-hop is the most wonderful music since it requires rhythm and tuning and of course proper uses of words which sounds the same. The best example that suits to this is poetry or poems. It has merely the same type of word or sound that was used.

The Most Disastrous Thing That Would Happen on a Road

Commonly, traffic is the most hated happenings on roads and also irritates not only the driver but also the commuters and passengers. Typically, in a busy country like Philippines, traffic usually occurs on public and national highways. Well, in some remote places in the Philippines, you can’t see any signs of traffic because of its road formations and traffic only happens in this area in times of landslide and flash floods or the road is not cemented.

Let’s go back to the main topic, who likes traffic anyway? After a long work, a long hectic schedules, a very busy day, unfortunately, you got stuck on a traffic jam. 20 minutes before the car moves then you have to passed-by several traffic lights and then you got home late. Stressful right??

Traffic anyway is taken form the Arabic word taraffaqa which means to walk along slowly together.
Anyway, traffic on road usually consist of pedestrian, ridden or herded animals, vehicles, street cars and other conveyances and to include “karitons”, tricycle and kalesas, either singly or together while using a public or private road for travel purposes.

Traffic is organized in many jurisdictions, either marked by lanes, junctions, intersections, traffic signals or simple signs. Traffic is classified by types:  the Heavy Motor Vehicles (e.g. car, truck); other vehicle (e.g. moped bicycles) and pedestrians.

Different types may share the same speed limits or not or may segregate in any other way to make an easement on the road but some rely on driver’s common sense for the safety of its passenger and for the easement of the traffic flow.

Events which disrupt the flow and cause the flow disorganized include collisions, road constructions which commonly cause major disruption and debris in the roadway. Particularly in a busy freeway or highway, a complete breakdown or disorganized traffic may cause traffic jams and grid locks. Grid locks are events which different direction of an intersection meets at the same time causes traffic thus queuing theory, stochastic process and equation of mathematical physics are applied to solve problems on grid locks and traffic flow.

In many countries, traffic regulations are codified, setting out the legal requirements and proper punishments are observed if and when the rule is not followed.

Highway Code which United Kingdom set out the rules includes obligations and the advices on how to drive safely.

In Philippines we have we have the Land Transportation and Traffic Code which defines each terms regarding on the word or phrase used in this act. R.A. No. 8750 sets the Seat Belts Use Act and R.A. Act No. 2000 on Limited Access Facilities Act.

Basically, the rules of the road are the general practices and procedures which a driver and passenger should follow. This rule usually applied by all road users including an individual who are not riding on a vehicle but using the road for travel purposes. The rules of these users differ on the rules of the heavy motor type vehicle since these users are called pedestrians. One of the common rules for these pedestrians is “NO JAY WALKING”. The basic traffic rules are define by an international treaty under the Authority of the United Nations, this rule is the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Not all countries use this convention; there are unwritten local rules of road which are generally used by local drivers.

As a major rule “drivers are expected to avoid collision with another vehicle and pedestrian, regardless of whether or not applicable rules of the road allow them to be where they happen to be.”

Road Traffic Controllers
In addition, traffic light and traffic signs must be obeyed and instruction may be given by a police officer if there’s a busy crossing which traffic light can’t control the volume of traffic. These police officers know also as road traffic controllers. They control around a construction zone, accident area, or other road disruption that may affect the traffic flow.

“Vehicles often come into conflict with another vehicle or pedestrian because their intended course of travel intersect and thus interfere with each others route” resulting for the disruption of the traffic.
“The general principle establishes who has the right to go first is called ‘right-of-way’ or ‘priority’. It establishes who has the right to use the conflicting part of the road and who has to wait until the other does so.” Signs, signals, marking and other traffic signals or features are sometimes used to make the priority open and clear.  One of the universal signs is the “stop sign”. In different places or locations which do not have any signs or markings, different rules are observed.

Crosswalks or pedestrian crossings are common in populated areas which indicate that pedestrians have priority over the vehicular traffic.

Pedestrian

The appearance of the pedestrian crossings varies greatly but the 2 most common appearance is the: (1) a series of parallel white strips (2) or two long horizontal lines.
Horizontal Pedestrian Lane

White Strips Pedestrian Lane
Pedestrian Sign

Some pedestrian crossings in some countries put traffic lights signals which will make the vehicle to halt so that the pedestrians can cross without harm but some cities like New York which I believe that their technology is highly upgraded and so with the other countries uses a traffic signal which a pedestrian must push the button to assert attention to the drivers to stop.

Commonly in some countries like ours, the Philippines, has no traffic signals in pedestrian crossing like New York City but in this case, the pedestrian has the priority to use the crossing in order for him to cross the other side of the street and vehicle must stop but in some state like Nevada, cars has the right of way when pedestrian crossing forbids.

Authorities forbid crossing or using the road anywhere other than the appropriate pedestrian crossing is termed as jaywalking.

Speed Limits

The higher the speed of a vehicle, the greater the possibility of collision and the lesser the avoidance and the greater the damage if collision occurs and the other way around. Expected that in some areas, signage are posted regarding on the appropriate speed limit in an area, this is done to avoid accidents and vehicle are not supposed to be driven at speed which are higher than the posted maximum speed limit.

Overtaking

One of the major causes of collision and traffic is due to overtaking. When a vehicle overtakes another vehicle and inappropriate speed limit is not used in that particular area, tendencies are that drivers can’t control anymore the car resulting to traffic. Overtaking refers to the maneuver by which one more vehicle one more vehicle traveling in the same direction is passed by another vehicle.

Rush Hour

In major cities around the globe, a great intensity of traffic and a large number of vehicle uses the road at the same time and at predictable times in a business days is called as rush hour or peak hour.

Congested Traffic/Traffic Congestion

During period of time referred as rush hour which in some places has traffic volume is consistently, extremely large is called traffic congestion or congested traffic. “EXCEPTIONALLY, traffic upstream of an accident of an obstruction such as construction may also be constrained resulting in a traffic jam.”

** As these terms used and defined one of the most common causes why traffic congestion happens because of vehicles who parks along the road resulting for cars to stop and traffic occurs. Another thing also is that sidewalk vendors establish their product beside the road. They occupy a small part of the road but it gives a big impact on the traffic flow. I’m not saying that these people should stop selling their products because I know that that is the only thing they earn for living, I just want them to occupy spaces which can’t cause traffic jam. For instance, Carmen Market and Cogon Market which is situated in Cagayan de Oro City here in the Philippines sets the best example foe me since I am a natural born Kagay-anon and I am proud to be one J. Their establishments cause a big breakdown of the traffic flow because they occupy a small space on the road which is also small.

STRESS is one of the effects when you got stuck on traffic. Your patience is also tested in this type of DISASTER (HAHAHAHAHAHA). Actually, here in the Philippines, one thing that irritates me and maybe you also is about the attitude of the “kondokturs” towards its passenger o pasahero. I don’t like the way how they approach their passenger. I’m not underestimating them but some of them don’t know how to deal with other people :D

So, I do recommend the saying “PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE” HAHAHAHAH, seriously, for a safety travel and for you to avoid danger and to avoid being the CAUSE of traffic just follow the rule, okay?

NOTE:
Have you observed that during traffic, motorcycles can easily get through? HAHAHA Think of it :D

Stakeholders Forum: Where Industry and Academe Meets

Where Industry and Academe Meets
Stakeholders Forum: Where Industry and Academe Meets, held at AVR 3, Academic Building 3, Capitol University last October 6, 2011 was the most educational forum I’ve been through. I am a student assistant assigned at Admissions and External Affairs Office which is the office who facilitated the said event. Big companies from banking to mechanical industry were invited to the event.

The most highlighted part of the event was the response of the industry partners. Since I was tasked to take pictures, I grab the opportunity to listen on their responses which was very fruitful and educational. And here are the responses which gave me an idea to write this article.

·         The Language
§  One of the responses was about the “English Proficiency” of college students. Students have the capability and ability to use the appropriate grammar and the uses of the parts of speech and can communicate through written forms BUT they find difficulty to express their ideas through verbal communication.

·         Interviews
§  Final interviews or any form of interview is the entry point for an applicant who is applying for any position. It was said that aspirants can’t express their self because of lack of confidence and due to nervousness.

·         On-The-Job Training (OJT Programs)

§  For college students who took this subject, one of the inputs was to have an NBI clearance especially if they are trained in a banking industry. Though, they said that it may take time to have an NBI clearance for first timers, rest assured that by the next time they get their clearance due to expiration or whatever, it won’t take time again. This was said from one the officer of the NBI who attended the forum.
§  SERVICE ORIENTED was another input. Trainees often do things which is forbidden inside the companies and sometimes they say “training ra bitaw ni”. A trainee should posses this attitude for his/her preparation for his/her own future in the industry.

·         Attitudes
§  In preparation for the future, a student must master and posses INTIATIVE, RESPONSIBLE and PUNCTUALITY. Be initiative. Do things without any supervision of your head and capable of making simple decisions. For you to reach a high position in the industry, one of the qualifications is being responsible. Responsible in a way that can cause a good effect in the industry. Punctuality is an X-factor. One should be on time “all the time”.

·         LEADERSHIP
¨    Every person possesses leadership and this kind of attitude can give an individual his/her potential to stand out against all odds.

·         Business Skills
¨    Since it was all about the academe and industry, business skills was also at the list. If you have already the “service oriented”, this may be an easy part for you. Business skill is a great help in the industry. It creates outstanding person because of this skill. Have you seen a chart of some offices titled “EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH”? I bet you one already. This is a good example of persons who possess business skills.

For so many thins that was said, I think this was the most important. Always remember that when academe is lost, so with industry and the other way around.
